Farmington Bay Snipe Hunt

November 29, 2015  •  Leave a Comment

Not a hunt, really, just an early winter birding trip to Farmington Bay with expectations of seeing Pipits, ducks and perhaps an early arriving Bald Eagle or a day-flying Barn Owl. A couple of Bald Eagles were perched on the "eagle" tree and the cold conditions decreased the amount of open water for ducks and other waterfowl to feed and rest on. The duck hunting season is winding down with only the most hardy heading out to the empoundments when it gets cold in late November. I thought I saw a Pipit in the weeds near the road, but didn't get a positive ID. The best find of the day were a pair of Wilson's Snipe perched in the reeds near the management-area entrance gate. I managed to get a shot of them before a Great Blue Heron flushed them from their cozy location.  APR_2736Wilson's Snipe APR_2736Bald Eagle APR_2736Northern Harrier APR_2736Northern Harrier APR_2736Northern Shoveler
