With the first significant snowstorm of the season expected tomorrow, we had a good showing of birds in the yard and a warm-before-the-storm afternoon. A steady supply of nyger seed has kept a flock of 12-18 Lesser Goldfinch hanging around the feeders for almost a year now. Dark-eyed Juncos have descended from the mountains to take up, hopefully, residence and provide their cheery parts to the Chickadee and Goldfinch chorus. But they better all watch out, at least one American Kestrel has taken up residence. Small birds aren't their primary food source, but they would snatch a Lesser Goldfinch if the opportunity presented itself.
